Homemade Meat Sauce

Happy Wednesday! Or as it was called when I was growing up “Prince Pasta Night.”

I posted this a couple years ago on my other blog, but it seems to have been eaten up when I did my transfer back to WordPress. I made it for tonight’s dinner and thought this was a perfect time to blog about it again. It’s always a hit in our house! πŸ™‚

I admit that I’m not always the best cook in the kitchen. All too often I’ve burned chicken or my meatloaves come out not so loaf-like. But one thing that I, proudly, never screw up is my homemade meat sauce.Β Homemade in the sense that I have to put ingredients together to create it, but I don’t make my own sauce…yet.

Ingredients
Olive Oil
1 pound 80/20 ground beef (I like to have a little fat for flavor)
1 vidalia onion
1 jar of preferred pasta sauce (usually Francesco Rinaldi or Aldi brand)
Conservative sprinkling of garlic powder and oregano for taste
Optional add-ins: Canned or diced tomatoes; using ground sausage instead of beef

Directions
1) Chop onion into small pieces, saute in a pan with olive oil until tender. Add onions to crock pot.
2) Add more olive oil to pan and then cook the meat until brown. Add meat to crock pot.
3) Add remaining ingredients in to the Crock Pot and keep on warm until ready to serve.

The Crock Pot is definitely an option in terms of making this dish, but I’ve found that it tastes so much better when it’s had time to simmer.

I’ve mixed the sauce with all kinds of pasta; my favorite is penne (little caves for the sauce to hide!) while David prefers angel hair.

And it’s pretty tasty on its own as well, which is evident when half of the pot is empty before dinner has even started. πŸ˜‰

What’s your favorite dish to make?
